How two high school students have made their lives based around a small family farm.

Circle S Farms - Lily Steed and John Ross Bryan
00:00 / 00:00

Lily Steed comes from a long line of farmers and educators. Her family owns Circle S Farms, an 8th generation family farm that was founded in 1839 and is located in LaGuardo, TN. Circle S specializes in hog production and agritourism including weddings, berry picking, field trips and a Christmas tree farm. At seven years old, Steed began to take on a large responsibility of the farm, including feeding the hogs, helping with planting, and other ins and outs on the farm. As a high school senior she now helps with processing hogs, organizing weddings, and even has her own deer processing business with her boyfriend John Ross Bryan. Steed now is pursuing the Miss Tennessee Crown and is advocating for agricultural literacy, in hopes that more people will have an understanding and appreciation for the importance of agriculture.

"The struggles of the farm especially is mother nature because you can’t control the weather so, um like for the past three weeks it has rained and you can't really do much farming in the rain especially whenever you’re trying to get ready for um, get ready for like the spring months, so all of our strawberries and what we’re trying to do is get everything g ready down there. Mow weed and you can’t do that on the rain especially when everything is flooded and muddy. So mother nature would most definitely be one of the biggest things because when everything is cold and when everything is frozen over we still have to feed the pigs, we still have to farm, we just, it means it’s a lot harder because our tires are cold while we’re doing it."

"Whenever I first started, I really didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t realize that once I started how committed I was going to be, um...but it kind of changes your perspective on things because you don’t really know ow all this stuff works and you start doing it yourself and your like wow, I would've never though that's how that happens so it kind of changed my life for the better."
